Onboarding / Induction

1. What Onboarding/Induction Is

Onboarding/induction is the structured process through which a new hire is integrated into the organization: trained, oriented, mentored, supervised, and monitored. In a safeguarding-aware context, it includes explicit safeguarding training, supervision protocols, role shadowing, and early monitoring.

2. Why Onboarding/Induction Matter for SAM Risk & Defensibility

  • Bridges the new hire into expected norms, reducing misunderstanding or drift
  • Allows early observation, feedback, and course correction of behavior
  • Demonstrates commitment to building capability in practice
  • These processes become evidence should a question of fault or responsibility arise

3. Key Elements / What Should Be Included & How to Do It (with SAM Focus)

  • Formal induction training including safeguarding policies, role zones, and reporting obligations
  • Role shadowing/supervised practice with experienced staff in the first weeks
  • Checkpoints/milestones (e.g., 30 / 60 / 90 days) tied to behavior, compliance, performance
  • Supplemental training or refresh tailored to evolving risk zones
  • Feedback/reflection sessions for new hire to discuss uncertainties, challenges
  • Early monitoring/supervision plan (more oversight early, tapering over time)
  • Evaluation/probation assessments including safeguarding/behavior metrics
  • Documentation & records (attendance, training completion, feedback logs)

4. Fit-for-Purpose Criteria (Jigsaw Lenses)

  • Strategic Fit: onboarding includes key safeguarding priorities, not add-ons
  • Operational Fit: realistic, resourced, scheduled, not overwhelming
  • Lived Experience Fit: supportive, clear expectations, designed for learning
  • Defensibility (Transparency/Traceability): records of training, feedback, assessments, deviations

5. Indicators of Effectiveness & Warning Signs

Success Indicators

  • New hire meets behavior expectations without boundary issues
  • Fewer early incidents or misunderstandings
  • Feedback from new hire that induction was clear, helpful
  • Performance reviews reference induction training and probation metrics

Warning Signs

  • Boundary or conduct issues early on
  • New hire confusion about expectations
  • No documented feedback or monitoring
  • Induction plan exists only on paper and is skipped
