Definition
A jigsaw piece without a connection: a risk with no control attached, or a control attached to nothing. Orphans are outlined on the Puzzle Board and counted in its toolbar; clicking the count highlights them.
Why This Matters
Protection lives in connections. A risk the team has named but not addressed, and a control nobody can describe the purpose of, are the picture’s gaps — and the board counts them because that is exactly what they are. Each orphan is work waiting to be done: a risk with no control is an uncertainty ready to be clarified into a candidate control, and a control serving nothing is a review waiting to be performed.
